Since the advent of the economic recession in the United States of America in 2007, the US Department of Agriculture made it known that 1 in every 9 American was on food stamps as unemployment was rising in an alarming way. Since then economic conditions have gotten worse, and the number of American families needing hunger relief have increased. It is therefore conceivable that in these circumstances, struggling American families are likely to spend their dwindling cash resources on food and other necessities, rather than on outstanding debt repayments. The latter meanwhile is accruing in ever larger amounts, adding to the financial woes of a substantial number of Americans on the verge of starvation.
