Business ideas are as varied as their cost to start up. If you are starting with a low budget in mind good for you. you will find it easier get financing or to bootstrap finance for your business. Bootstrap financing is…using your own money. I highly recommend that in any case, unless it is prohibitively expensive.

With bootstrap financing you will get some important advantages over your competition. Some of the advantages are high business worth, since not money was borrowed to hurt equity, freedom from lenders, solid financial position for future investors, and less payments on the interest for the loans.

If your business has high projected income, and very little overhead expenses, then borrowing is not so bad specially if you pay the debt within a month, some credit companies give cash back and credits when payments are made in less than a month. It is important to note that most of your suppliers will not extend you any credit at the beginning, that as everything in business, takes time. Once you have established a relationship with them, credit will be given to you.

Most low start up cost businesses are not high income ventures. There are exceptions, and high income almost always come with business growth. These type of businesses are ideal for part time or work at home side ventures. Low start up cost businesses also open doors for additional related businesses to be created, for example if you open a business as an airbrush artist, you can eventually grow that in to an auto paint touch up professional, or if you start a bookkeeping business, with a little additional training, you can start an incorporation service. As you start a business remember to be flexible. As you put your ideas into action additional business opportunities will show up.

We’ll use our example of $140,000 we arrived at for gross sales in our previous article. There is also net sales which we are not going to get into at this time. We’re just keeping things basic and simple right now in order to get a general overview of how it all works together. Later, we can come back and look at further details.

So we need $140,000. The marketing plan is dependent on what we’re selling. The cost/price formula is worked out when the retail price of the widget is not known — like when we are manufacturing it for example. In the Internet business, if you are going to sell e-books that you will be writing, you need to know how much to sell them for.

Here you would calculate the unit cost of making the product, then you would multiply by 3 or 4 depending on the anticipated distribution plan — if you’ll sell through wholesalers, dealers or end users.

For our purpose now, let’s say we buy it from a wholesaler at $5 and they already have a suggested retail price of $10. Obviously that would not be enough margin in the real world. You would normally use 3X or 4X your cost. It all depends on the product. More on that in a bit.

We’re using this to make it simple to calculate. You would also get extra discount when you increase quantity, but we’ll leave that for now too. For example, if I write a book for publishing, I will have to build in a retail price that will include a dealer discount, a wholesale discount and a distributor discount.

Typically, these will expect, or demand, 40% discount, 45 to 50% and 50 to 60% respectively. That’s because the distributor sells to the wholesaler, the wholesaler sells to the dealer and the dealer sells to the consumer, and everybody has to get paid.

So, if your cost for producing the book is $5, you will have to set a retail price of $25 in order to cover the highest discount of the the distributor. You might say, well I won’t be selling it through distributors, I will sell it myself to retail stores.

How do you know you won’t be selling through distributors? If the book takes off and become a best seller through no effort on your part (how lucky can you be!), distributors will come to you and you will have to then change the retail price. So you need to prepare ahead. You can always sell your books at “show specials” or “book signing special” while you sell it yourself.

At $25 selling to distributors, you would make $5 per book after your cost of $5. And remember our financial analysis in our first article, you can apply a quick calculation of 50% for direct cost of gross sales. So that means you’re left with $2.50 gross margin per book before operating expenses.

By the way, another thing to keep in mind is that once you do have dealers and wholesalers and distributors selling your book, you no longer can sell yourself at discounted prices because it would not be fair to your sellers. You need to protect them at this point.

But for now, based on that $10 retail price, let’s get the number of widgets we need to sell by dividing our monthly figure of $11,667 by $10 retail price.

That’s 1,167 widgets per month in order to achieve our projected sales figures. Now let’s find out how many we must sell per week. We need to multiply the monthly amount by 12 to get a yearly total, then divide by 52. That comes to 269 per week and 28 per day. Now you can tie this in to the “action calls per day” that must be made to sell 28 widgets a day.

Of course, we’re only looking at the simple life here. There will be a variety of situations from type of product, type of industry, type of customer, type of market. If you sell by boxes of 12, that means you only need to sell 2.2 boxes a day — if you sell 3 boxes, you’re ahead. So adapt your particular situation on your spreadsheet, following the process.

Now, who’s going to buy these widgets? Make a list of your prospects. Get directories from various sources (the local library is a good place) and start entering the information on your “call cards”. Get as much information as you can: company name, contact name, address, phone numbers, size of company, etc.

Obviously you’ll approach a ma & pa business differently from a multi-million dollar corporation. Find out what your widget would do to make their business easier or faster or more profitable.

In the Internet business, look for your target market. Then ask yourself “Who are they?”, “Where do I find them?” In other words keywords they use that I can integrate in my “call page” so they will find what I have to offer them.

All that information is what you will use to make your script (or your web page and email follow-ups on the Internet) for your first telephone contact, your second personal contact, your third follow-up contact and subsequent calls. Make sure that your widget is usable by them, remember you sell “benefits” and “solutions” — not widgets that you think are great. If they are great, why are they great from your customer’s standpoint, what is it that makes them great. This now picks up in the “selling” part of business which I cover in another article.

As you find out more about the market, you will also find out about their objections, and your competition. This should not discourage you, but it should stretch and challenge you. Remember, always find out what your competition is doing and do better.

There’s always more than what we can discuss in one article, but, armed with what we have so far, in my next article I”ll talk about financing our venture. /dmh

If you run a small business, you will often have to do things that you really don’t want to do. After all, in a little company the proprietor wears many hats, and there are things that you simply can’t delegate. Most people that have the entrepreneurial spirit for instance are not very good at accounting and they hate to do paperwork, unfortunately these are two of the things that business people often have to do. These are not things that you can procrastinate with or put off.

So the question you need to ask yourself and your mirror is; “Do I have the Self Discipline to run my own company?” Now it’s true that if you are going to be making a profit you might get a little more excited about doing those chores that you really don’t feel like dealing with. However, businesses don’t make money all the time, there are good times and bad times, and there even very harsh recessions. Therefore, you must have the self-discipline to see it through.

One way to tell if you have the self-discipline necessary is to consider all your other activities. Did you stick with the program if you played team sports, did you work hard in practice to play a musical instrument in the high school band, or did you study hard in school to get good grades; the answers to these questions will give you clues into your own psychological profile, and in understanding if you have what it takes.

Now, you can fool me, and you could probably fool those around you and have them believe that you are one with perseverance, dedication, self-control, and hard work ethic. But you can’t fool yourself, not in business anyway, because if you do it will cost you your profits. Indeed, I hope you will please consider this.

This just in from BusinessWeek: “Nouriel Roubini, the NYU economist who accurately predicted the financial meltdown, writes an important commentary in The Globe and Mail about two disparate American economies: “There is a smaller one that is slowly recovering and a larger one that is still in a deep and persistent downturn,” he says.”

Roubini goes on to outline two separate Economies emerging within the United States — a smaller economy driven by large corporations that has slowly begun to emerge from recession, and the larger economy that is still in a deep and persistent downturn.

Echoing what I have been discussing in recent months with small business owners and in my Twitter postings @marketyoursite, small business owners are reacting with extreme skepticism (even pejorative sarcasm) at the White House notion that the economy is improving. It turns out, the “recovery” is only a half-truth and merely addresses the corporate sector which, as Professor Roubini points out, has been able to re-negotiate its debt burdens (or receive government bailout money to ease the pain).

Ironically, the larger economy is the small business sector. It should be clear by now that the small business sector is not going to get any help from this Administration. Yet waiting for a recovery is not plausible while one’s business is suffering repeated setbacks and declining revenues.

One of my suggestions would be to start thinking like a larger corporation. Big business does not think in terms of its individual storefronts; even the storefronts themselves are 100,000 sq. ft. mega-boxes versus the mom & pop sized retail establishments we see in strip centers. Wal-Mart is not thinking about its current inventory that’s on the shelf; they don’t even pay for current inventory until after it has sold…

My point is that small business owners need to get wise to the way the Government plays business. The rewards are there for the biggest players, even though they make the least difference in the total economic scheme. They are the BRANDS in the marketplace that make the headlines. Even the media (another mega-corporate empire) responds to this because it is a story that can be packaged easily.

The real story is you and I. Small business. We are the driving force of any economic recovery because we are the largest player.

The big players have websites and they transact far outside their neighborhood boundaries. At the same time, they intend to OWN whatever market they are in. They don’t play for second or third place; they realize that a loss these days equals death to their business.

How do you play outside your boundaries? With an effective website. Not just a “pretty” site that isn’t relevant to your market, but an SEO-enabled website that benefits your bottom line.

Starting a new business is very important because in the first place, it creates new job opportunities and brings new products to the market. However, most businesses hardly last long due to various challenges. To start with, there is a lot of competition out there with other similar and stabilized big companies. For example, you need to lower the price of your goods and services a little less than the normal price to attract more customers. This will therefore mean that, you will receive less revenue for several months.

To start a business needs large amount of money. In most cases, you will face difficulties applying a loan because most lenders will demand records with good tracking. Even if you qualify for home equity loan, you will be at a risk of losing both your home and the store if in any case it fizzles. You might also encounter problems with your employees because if there are no revenues, where will get the money to pay them?

Sometimes, you could encounter difficulties finding the right employees to perform various tasks. This will eventually lead to poor management. Again, you might find the right employees but fail to sustain them especially if they demand high salaries. Poor planning is another problem which can make a small business to close suddenly.

Due to luck of capital, you might not be in a position to pay for extra classes for those employees who could need more training in their job. Most store owners are not informed leading to poor management and accumulation of debts. There is no short cut for wealth and, you’ve got to really work hard in order to achieve your ambitions. Again, this is not going to be easy and, since you will encounter many challenges on the way.

So you are all signed up for your flea market. Now, getting to the show and setting up is only half the battle. There’s so much more involved in making this show your best show and, of course, the goal is to sell your flea market items and handmade crafts.

First of all, unless absolutely unavoidable, you should never take on selling your flea market items or craft show products by yourself. While shows can be exciting and profitable, they can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. That’s why it’s important to bring along someone to help you work the booth and deal with customers. This will also give you a chance to get up and go to the bathroom and grab a hotdog or something to drink without losing sales.

It’s best to ask a friend or family member to go with you. Most will be willing – especially if they share the same love of flea market items and handcrafted products that you do. Pick up the tab for their parking and buy them lunch. Don’t make them pay for anything – if at all possible. That’s just one perk. Perhaps you can offer them a percentage of the profits for those who are reluctant to help you out.

If you decide to go it alone, realize that your booth will be unmanned for a certain period of time. If you must take a break – even for a short time, try to get someone in the neighboring booths to help you out. And, by all means, offer the same back to them.

Probably the first thing you should do upon arrival and completion of set-up is to walk the show. See what other vendors are offering and what they are charging. Ask them about their work, introduce yourself as a fellow flea marketer or craftsperson, and take an interest in their booth. This is a perfect time to take note of how their booths are set up, note what they are doing to attract customers, and mimic their demeanor, if it seems like it would help you sell yourself. Consider what they’ve done and how they’ve done it – especially if they’re selling something similar to what you have available yourself.

There are two things that vendors at flea market or craft shows do that could hinder sales. Because your booth space is your showroom, you need to project a professional image. That means certain do’s and don’ts.

Many flea market or craft shows these days ban smoking while in attendance – both by vendors and attendees. Even if smoking isn’t banned, it’s a really bad idea to smoke while in your booth space, especially if you are selling clothing or items where smoke smell might linger. Since it’s not advisable to attend a flea market or craft show to sell your product alone, tell your partner you are taking a break, and walk away from your booth – far away. Smoking can run off potential buyers quicker than body odor!

Though much less likely to offend than smoking, eating while in your booth is also a chancy behavior. You really should avoid eating in front of customers. When you are engaging in behaviors like eating, it seems to customers that you are not really interested in selling your flea market items or crafts and they will simply walk away.

Greet everyone who stops by to look, but don’t be pushy. Be friendly, but don’t feel you have to over sell your flea market products or crafts unless what you’ve made has a unique feature that isn’t readily visible. Being pushy can drive away a potential customer quite quickly.

At the very least, make sure your display table is clean and attractive and that your products are well displayed with prices clearly marked. Some people string lights in their booths and display color photos of their work to spice things up a bit. Still others will play some type of music which can relax a customer and make them more apt to buy.

If you’re a crafter, take this opportunity to build your inventory. Demonstrating your craft can attract a lot of attention as folks like to see things being made. There will possibly be a lot of downtime while you’re at the show, so bring along your supplies and continue making your crafts while you’re selling. People like to see a craftsperson creating artwork in his booth, not just selling it. While this isn’t always possible, it’s a crowd-pleasing idea that works well for jewelry makers, woodworkers, quilters and other craftspeople. Show customers that you know what you are doing and that you love it enough to continue even when you could be relaxing. Making crafts while in your booth serves a dual purpose: you show them you love your work, but you are also building your inventory.

As funny as this may sound, it is not uncommon to have fun and still do some business to make lots of profit this Christmas season. All you have to do is organize yourself, take good look at your environment and fill in the needs that come up. Just because it is Christmas does not mean it should be fun all the way without some business, who says you ca not eat your cake and have it?

Find A Need.

There are certain things you need to put in place to really get you started. Like I said in my introduction, you have to look at your environment, find a need or needs as the case may be and fill it or fill them. Has it ever occurred to you that some people who are on essential services will be on duty on Christmas day? How about those traditional services one can not do without but will still be in short supply during Christmas? Find a need and fill it and you will soon find out how easy it is to have fun and make money.

Meet The Need

After finding what the likely needs of your environment are, you need to make effort to gather all the things you need to meet those needs. Meeting the needs of people around you depends on the passion and drive in you. You just have to be at the right place and at the right time. Take the Beach for instance, we all know that Ice cream, football and even flowers will be the needs of so many people who will show up in a place like that, so why not take your passion for fun and business there to get something out of there.

Be Calculative

Always have at the back of your mind that Christmas will certainly not last a life time and this is the reason you have to be quick and do not stock too many products as they will soon be out of fashion as soon as the season is over. Remember, Christmas lights, customized T-shirts and others will not be useful after this period so do not buy more than the demand available in the market.

Whatever you chose, do be conscious of one thing, we all have needs that must be met and there are individuals out there who really do not mind how they spend their money this Christmas, all I advise is that you get your share of the Christmas boom to make yourself some money while having fun.

Apartment preparation services help property owners in marketing their apartments for rental. When the old tenant moves out, floors, walls, ceilings need cleaning and light repair, which is where you come in. The landlords needs your service because if the apartment is in great condition he or she will be able to charge a higher rent. It is important to be healthy for this job, a lot of time will be spent on your knees on the floor.

Begin by purchasing basic cleaning equipment and materials. Advertise in the local newspaper, and also in any landlord associations in your local area, also advertise in the Yellow Pages, contact property managers, real estate agents, association managers and property owners. You can usually charge $75 or more per apartment deal. It will be better to get one large complex of apartments together in one deal, so you can maximize your time efficiency and maximize your profit. Also find apartment complexes that offer or specialize short term leases.

You can run this business from your home. Usually no staff is required unless you get more jobs than you can handle or the work required is extensive. This business is difficult for people with disabilities due to the physical labor involved. Your major expenses will be in cleaning equipment and materials which should be of high quality so maintenance costs are kept down. You should also keep an eye on insurance costs and tool repairs.

For related Internet links on this business do a search for the Building Contractors Association, the National Apartment Association and the National Property Managers Association.
